To celebrate five decades of metal music, Metal Hammer asked legendary metal artists to pick their favorite metal album from the last 50 years and Alex Laiho from the band Children of Bodom picked I GET WET as his top record of the 2000’s. “I Get Wet is an album that makes you smile and makes you want to party. Andrew W.K. is fucking crazy, but in a really good way. Uniquely crazy, I guess. He’s like a cartoon character that’s been brought to life – so hyper.
“We were recording Children Of Bodom’s Hate Crew Deathroll album, and She Is Beautiful was looping over and over in high rotation on MTV. I was, like, ‘Who the hell is this guy? I gotta get this record.’ So I did, and we just blasted it throughout the session. It was just planted in my head. The next time were in that studio, we figured we’d do a cover. That was a lot of fun. We ended up playing a show in Milwaukee, and Andrew was playing in the same venue in the basement. I finished our set, ran downstairs with my guitar tech, climbed onstage and played the song with him. That was a lot of fun, too.
I still listen to I Get Wet a lot. It’s not necessarily just party music. It’s wake-up music. It puts you in a good mood. And it still works – it’s pretty crazy.”
