Behind The Scenes Q&A On Working With The World’s Cutest Cat

Q&A: Andrew W.K. Dishes on Working with Lil BUB | By Betty Chu

We caught up with Andrew W.K. to get the real deal on working with an internet cat as famous as Lil BUB. Is she really as cute and sweet as we think she is? REALLY? His answers won’t disappoint you. Read on … and, PARTY ON!

Q: Tell us a little about your background – how long have you been into music?

Andrew W.K.: Well, I started playing piano around age 4 and music has been a big part of my life ever since. But it wasn’t until I moved to NYC at age 18 that I decided I wanted to become a Professional Partier. I dedicated myself to partying and celebrating life and trying to use music and entertainment and anything I could think of to spread feelings of fun and joyful energy! The Andrew W.K. party officially started in 1999 and has been growing strong ever since!

Q: Did you ever imagine in your wildest dreams you’d someday have the opportunity to work with a famous internet cat?

A: Most of the things that have happened in my life I never would’ve imagined in my wildest dreams! And Lil BUB is the perfect example! I don’t think I could’ve ever chosen to work with her – she had to choose me! That’s why it’s such a miracle and why I’m so thankful to her! It’s part of my destiny; and, your destiny has a way of surprising you! Working with Lil BUB was a dream come true – a dream that I hadn’t dreamed was possible to dream!

Q: Tell us what it’s really like to work with Lil BUB. Is she as adorable as we’d all imagine?

A: She’s even more adorable than you imagine! She’s very, very, soft, and very, very warm, and very, very calm and sweet! She has the softest and most delicate white paws and she has a very small body – like a baby! I was just blown away the first time I got to see her in person! She had an incredibly powerful energy that just hit me as soon as I was close to her, face-to-face. Getting to hold her and party with her, and just watch her work – she’s such a professional. I’ve absolutely never seen a cat with her personality before. It’s truly otherworldly! I really think she might not be from this planet Earth!

Q: What was your favorite part about shooting the show with Lil BUB?

A: Getting to make the music video for the “Party Animals” segment of the show was really amazing. I got to put BUB on my piano and sing right to her! It was my serenade to encourage her to follow her dreams! And we got to ride through space on a giant tuna! It was a real fish that they had in the studio! BUB was licking the fish and it made me hungry too! BUB’s dude wrote the song and we performed it together – it was so much fun to record it for this special. It’s going to be available on the computer for download too! I hope everyone likes it!

Q: Any funny behind the scenes moments you want to share?

Well, I’ve always been allergic to cats, which is very frustrating for me. I really love cats, and they’re so soft and fluffy – I always want to cuddle them and stroke them, but I never really do because I’ll get itchy and all allergic. But BUB was the first ever cat that I didn’t have any allergic symptoms from! Even when I held her and cuddled her, I was totally fine! I didn’t even have to take an allergy pill or anything! It’s just another example of her magical powers.

Q: What kind of advice would you give to fans looking to make it in the music/internet cat/TV biz?

A: Well, I learned a lot from BUB and from her Dude about how they got their start. I think the most important thing is to not force it. It has to happen naturally. With BUB, her owner just put a couple photos up for his friends to see privately, and then those friends showed them to other friends, and then it just kept spreading and growing! The cat has to want the magic to happen – you can’t force them to become famous. With BUB, it’s all in her control – it’s her destiny. I realize it can sound weird, but I really think she’s the one making all this happen. We’re just here to help!

Q: Will you be performing/touring any time soon?

A: I live in Manhattan, New York City, right near Times Square, so I’m always playing shows and having parties in the area. But I’m also on tour a lot, and playing different kinds of shows around the country and the world. I try to do as much as I can to get this party energy out there! I’m also writing my first ever book about partying! And people can party with me any time at – –!
