“When Kim and I sat down to write “I’m A Goner” we knew we wanted to make a song people can party to,” said Matt Johnson of MATT & KIM. “Soulja Boy and Andrew W.K’s lyrics and energy bring a whole new element to the song that we couldn’t be more excited about.” For the song, Converse approached MATT & KIM to curate the original track. After writing the song, the duo thought long and hard about who would make this track what they imagined it to be and tapped Andrew W.K. and Soulja Boy to enter the studio with them. “I’m A Goner” was produced by Matt Johnson of MATT & KIM and is the product of these dynamic artists weaving together their individual musical styles to create one unified piece of music.
“At its core, the Converse brand is about creativity and continuing our ongoing commitment to support it,” said Geoff Cottrill, Chief Marketing Officer of Converse. “The Three Artists. One Song program has brought together great artists and provided a platform for them to create amazing music and the new single “I’m A Goner” is no exception. Read an exclusive Q&A between Converse and Andrew on his experience:
Q: How did the collaboration come about?
A: The party gods of the universe set the wheels in motion and made it destiny that we all work together. I simply followed the will of the party music gods.
Q: What was it like working together?
A: Working together was a dream come true – it was a party – it was a fantasy turned into reality. I’ve been New York City friends with Matt and Kim for a while now. We toured together in Australia and I just loved them. It’s an energetic attitude that I can relate to. And talk about energy! Soulja Boy is the energy daddy. I’ve admired him very, very much since ever his first album came out and I think he’s just getting better and better. It’s the best music in the world for me. I couldn’t be more excited for this opportunity. When I got the invitation, I really was like, ‘Woah. I can barely believe this is happening. Yes!’
Q: What has been your favorite part of the collaboration process?
A: I just love being around other people to see how they party, how they live, how they work, how they approach their vision and carry themselves. I’ve had deep respect Matt, Kim, and Soulja already, so just getting to be together with them and serve this shared passion was a joy.
Q: Why “I’m A Goner”? What was the thinking behind the track?
A: Hopefully this song has different meanings for different listeners. Since it’s four different people making it up, I think it’s cool to be a goner in different ways. I was a goner the day I moved from Michigan to New York City. I was gone and knew I would never go back. But when you’re gone from one place, you also arrive at another. I just count my blessings that I got gone the way I have. And people who didn’t want me to leave shouldn’t bother looking for me. I’m gone.
Q: How do you think “I’m A Goner” reflects your different musical backgrounds?
A: This song has a lot of keyboards, and that’s my main instrument. Matt and I share a love of keyboard based rock, plus the drum beat is splashed out and heavy as anything – I think Soulja really took advantage of the rhythm – his voice just cuts.
Q: What were your initial thoughts when Converse first contacted you and told you about this project?
A: My first thoughts were, ‘IT’S PARTY TIME.’
Q: What does it mean to you to be part of the Converse 3 Artists 1 Song campaign?
A: Some of my favorite musicians have been part of this before, like Pharrel. It’s nice to be in the midst of other great folks whose work moves me – my Mom calls those people ‘my peers’.
Q: What music are you listening to and inspired by at the moment?
A: I’ve been listening to a lot of Aleister X tunes and Cherie Lily club bangers. There’s also an amazing new Belgian dance music group called the Party Harders who I just recorded with and another Belgian producer named Vhyce who just destroys with his house music – his music is so good, I can’t believe I get to be alive to listen to it.
Q: Music and fashion have long been closely linked. Would you say that your music inspires your fashion choices, or does your personal style have an impact on the music you make?
A: In case you couldn’t tell I am the most stylish person of all time, except for Karl Lagerfeld. Every single one of my songs is about fashion and style… and partying.
